Compliance needs a working rhythm

A folder of policies can be a useful start. It becomes much more valuable when people know which risks those policies address, who maintains them and what evidence shows that they work. That is the practical challenge behind an information security management system, or ISMS.

For a growing organisation, the difficulty is often coordination. A risk register sits in a spreadsheet, audit actions arrive by email and the latest policy is stored somewhere else. When a customer asks for assurance or an audit approaches, someone has to reconstruct the picture. A more effective approach is to organise the work as it happens.

Start with your business and its risks

ISO/IEC 27001:2022 provides requirements for establishing and continually improving an ISMS. Applying it starts with understanding your organisation: the services you deliver, information you depend on, people involved and boundaries of the system.

Set a clear scope before customising documents. Identify the information assets and suppliers that matter, consider threats and weaknesses, and agree how risks will be assessed. A prepared plan saves a blank-sheet exercise, but your decisions must reflect the way your business operates.

Connect the decisions to the evidence

A useful ISMS lets your team follow a simple chain: a business risk leads to a treatment decision, which leads to controls, accountable owners and evidence. The Statement of Applicability records which controls are necessary and the reasons for including or excluding them.

Consider an illustrative example: a supplier hosts customer information. The assessment identifies a dependency risk; the treatment includes supplier checks and access controls. The supplier review, approval and later reassessment should then be easy to locate. The value is the connection between the decision and the activity.

How ISMS Workspace supports the routine

DPS ISMS Workspace brings the implementation plan, documents, risks, controls and evidence into one environment. Its practical foundation includes more than 40 draft policies and procedures, an implementation task list and guidance to help teams get started.

  • Make ownership visible. Assign tasks, track dates and dependencies, and use My Tasks to keep individual responsibilities clear.
  • Maintain a consistent record. Adapt templates, manage document reviews and keep risks and treatment decisions alongside supporting evidence. Existing risk information can be brought in through the supported spreadsheet import.
  • Close the improvement loop. Record audits, incidents and corrective actions, then follow through on what needs to change.

Built-in guidance and AI assistance can help users develop a starting point or understand an activity. People still need to check accuracy, tailor the output and approve decisions. Software supports the management system; effective information security depends on how the organisation uses it.

Make the next review easier

Establish a review rhythm that fits the business. Check overdue actions, review changes to services and suppliers, update risks when circumstances change, and evaluate whether controls are effective. Management should use those findings to set priorities and provide resources.

If your team needs help defining the scope or maintaining momentum, DPS offers ISO 27001 implementation consultancy, internal auditing and ongoing ISMS management. You can choose the workspace, professional support or a combination.

A practical starting point: choose one important business process and trace its risks, controls, owners and evidence. Any missing link gives you a concrete improvement to make.

An organised workspace can support preparation and ongoing operation. Certification is a separate assessment by a certification body and is not guaranteed by using software.
